Jamie Burns

Jamie Burns is a Senior Research Analyst on the Competitive Intelligence (CI) team within Research Development at Arizona State University (ASU). In this role, she’s increased the diversity, capacity, and sophistication of the CI work at the university level. This work has contributed to improving strategic and actionable insights to assess institutional performance, defining and refining the competitive landscape in key areas, and growing research dollars via proposals to federal sponsors. Her ability to quickly pivot across topics, deliver high impact analyses, and her deep creativity make her a key asset in Research Development.

Ms. Burns has a national presence with her work. Jamie is certified in CI from the Strategic and Competitive Intelligence Professional Organization, serves on the steering committee for the national CI Working Group (founded at ASU, with many NORDP members), and has presented CI findings and techniques on over 30 occasions including a poster presentation at the NORDP 2018 Conference and a one-hour session at the NORDP 2019 Conference. Jamie was selected to present a four-hour workshop at the 2020 NORDP Conference.

Past Experience

Ms. Burns provides data-driven strategic documents to ASU's President (Dr. Michael Crow), Executive Vice President (Drs. Panchanathan and Woodbury), other leaders and faculty across four campuses. These efforts include analysis and visualization of both internal and external data, comparison to competitor institutions, insights gained from human intelligence, and forward-looking recommendations with actionable insights and plans for implementation. These analyses include:

Capacity Analyses – Internal-facing documents that examine institutional strengths. These documents are powerful synthesizers of capability across domains and often reveal a more equitable and potentially more responsive group of strengths that a single data set fails to identify.

Landscape Analyses – Deep examination of funding opportunities and leading research institutions and individuals within particular research areas such that they help position institutions better, identify exemplar, aspirational, or peer institutions, and provide a way forward to faculty, groups of faculty, or university leaders.

Presentations – Teach concepts around Competitive Intelligence (CI) and demonstrate the power of CI for academic institutions.

Data Analytics – Data-heavy presentations to inform strategy or define metrics for success.

NORDP Involvement

Ms. Burns has served as a past presenter at several NORDP conferences, is involved in NORDP’s mentoring program, and is a member of the Strategic Alliances Committee.

Ms. Burns has a Master’s in Public Administration, International Security Policy Specialization and Applied Science Specialization, and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, with concentrations in International Relations and Law & Public Policy. She is a Certified Analytics Professional via the Strategic and Competitive Intelligence Professional (SCIP) organization and has a Six-Sigma green belt certification.
