Marjorie Piechowski

Marjorie Piechowski, Ph.D. is Emerita Director of Research Support in the College of Engineering & Applied Science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, her culminating position in research development.  In that role, she established a new proposal development office, coordinating and editing large-scale multi-disciplinary, multi-investigator research proposals. She also wrote grants for student support, instrumentation and undergraduate and graduate scholarships, developed college-wide policy and procedures for grant administration and compliance, and served as editor of college research publications.  Since her retirement, she serves as a resource to the entire university for strategic initiatives in research development.

Past Experience

Earlier positions in her 35-year research development career included Grant Information Specialist at Marquette University and 17 years as the founding Director of Research and Sponsored Programs at DePaul University.  During her extensive career, she has coordinated and written dozens of large-scale, collaborative grant applications and facilitated several thousand individual faculty research proposals to federal, state, private and industry sponsors.  She is widely sought out for proposal development workshops, including at Qatar National Science Foundation, Osaka University in Japan and over 75 U.S. colleges and universities. She also has presented webinars on proposal development for the Society of Research Administrators International and the Canadian Association of Research Administrators.

As an independent proposal development consultant, she has written over thirty-three million dollars of successful grants for a variety of colleges and universities, primarily from the U.S. Department of Education and the National Science Foundation. For the last twenty years, she has reviewed proposals for the U.S. Department of Education and she is an evaluator on NSF educational proposals.  She has served in leadership roles in the National Organization of Research Development Professionals, the National Council of University Research Administrators and the Society of Research Administrators International, serving as International and Midwest Section president and as an SRAI Distinguished Faculty.

NORDP Involvement

She joined NORDP in 2013 and immediately began presenting sessions at NORDP conferences, including at the first poster session.  She served on the NORDP Board from 2014-2017 and was Board Secretary in 2016.  She was Co-Chair of the Member Services Committee (2016-2017) and served on the Professional Development Committee (2014-2016).  As a past and current mentor in NORDP, Marjorie has generously shared her long experience and commitment to research development, as well as materials she has developed for enhancing individual and institutional proposal success.
