Peggy SundermeyerPeggy Sundermeyer

As the Director of Sponsored Research in the Office of Academic Affairs from 2014 – 2021, Peggy helped build institutional capacity through the development of grant applications, collaborations, and partnerships. She worked to increase the amount of external support and develop the grant getting knowledge and skill set of faculty and administrative units. As a private predominantly undergraduate college of liberal arts and sciences, she works one on one with faculty members, especially early career faculty. She worked with academic leadership to secure funding for institutional level programs. Peggy also worked with others to increase the engagement of Trinity in the San Antonio community and to enhance the visibility of Trinity University nationally.

Past Experience

Prior to relocating to Trinity University, Peggy worked at the University of Minnesota, holding a number of positions in the Office of the Vice President for Research (VPR). Initially hired at UMN in 1996 to design and implement professional development for faculty in the Responsible Conduct of Research, she worked with faculty leadership and subject matter experts to implement a modularized curriculum, covering everything from authorship to financial management with both in person and online options. In 2004 she was asked by the VPR to establish an office of research development, the first of its kind at the UMN and one of the earliest in the United States. The Office of Research Advancement created multiple internal award programs, supported large interdisciplinary applications, and worked closely with Deans who shortly established their own collegiate RD operations with similar goals. Peggy started her academic career in 1987 as the Assistant Dean, M.J. Neeley School of Business, Texas Christian University, and as an adjunct instructor at the University of Texas at Arlington. In addition, she has over 10 years’ experience as a federal contracting officer and many years of service as a consultant and adviser in federal grant and contracting policy.

NORDP Involvement

Peggy currently participates in the International Working Group, a part of the Strategic Alliance committee (SAC). She previously served as Co-Chair of the SAC from 2017 – 2022 and as an initial liaison to NACRO and INORMS. She has been a PEERD consultant since 2019. On behalf of the University of Minnesota, Peggy participated in the initial meeting of what would become NORDP. She served on the Steering Committee and then as a founding Director on the Board beginning in 2009. She served two consecutive terms of three years each and the last four years as Treasurer. In 2016, she received the Holly Falk-Krzesinski Award, in recognition to her service to NORDP and the RD profession. She was an inaugural member of the NORDP Fellows
